How to: View which files and folders are in use on a network.
Solution:
Open 'NetWatcher' and select 'By Open Files' from the 'View' menu.
1) Make sure 'Remote Administration' is enabled on the computer.
2) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
3) Select 'Programs' and select 'Accessories'.
4) Select 'System Tools' and select 'Net Watcher'. (The 'Net Watcher' window appears, showing the users connected to your computer.)
5) Select the computer to administer:
NOTE: A remote Windows 95 computer must have 'Remote Administration' enabled for you to administer that computer remotely from your Windows 95 computer.
a) Select the 'Administer' menu and select 'Select Server...'. (The 'Select Server' dialog box appears.)
b) Do one of the following to select the remote computer:
1] Type the name of the remote computer in the 'Name' box.
2] Search for the remote computer:
a] Click 'Browse...'. (The 'Browse for Computer' dialog box appears, listing the computers that are members of your workgroup.)
b] (Special Case) If the computer you want to administer is NOT a member of your workgroup:
1} Click the plus sign (+) next to 'Entire Network'. (The list of domains and workgroups on the entire network appears.)
NOTE: If the remote computer is located on another subnet or on the other side of a router, you cannot browse the 'Entire Network' to locate the remote computer.
2} Click the plus sign (+) next to the domain or workgroup containing the remote computer you want to administer. (A list of computers which are members of the domain or workgroup appears.)
3} Select the remote computer you want to administer.
c] Click 'OK'. (The 'Select Server' dialog box reappears, with the name of the selected computer listed.)
c) Click 'OK'. (The 'Net Watcher' window reappears.)
6) Select the 'View' menu and select 'By Open Files'. (Open files on a shared resource are displayed, showing the filename, the server it is located on, the user accessing the file, and the type of access to the file.)
NOTE: The information displayed includes the share name of the server containing the file, which computer is currently accessing the file, and whether the file is open for read-only or for reading and writing.
